Casting Actors Roles and “Real” Reality
By · CommentsThe industry of entertainment is is changing in such a way that affects all of us because these changes reflect real life, and they affect us even if you do not watch TV. Most of society, even if you don’t watch regular TV, can’t help but be touched by casting more realistic looking “family units” with acting skills not considered to have the “it” factor. Actors’ roles and guidelines for them are changing. Our real world is not made up of all Baldwin’s or Cindy Crawford’s and Hollywood is finally casting more realistic people and creating more realistic characters, especially on television. We now have role models with our egos and beliefs.
TV shows are a great place to do some of this study. What was sexy was always the beauty queen archetype; anyone not beautiful was rather left behind or only got roles playing the friend or sister but not in the starring roles. Their sexuality did not fit the mold of all the stereotypical roles. Now we have a broader scope to look for funny, smart and all the characteristics they are using as even main actors not to be played by seemingly appealing drop dead gorgeous women and men - I love it. We are finally finding all shapes, sizes and personalities in most roles. More so called “geeky” roles are going to sort of geeky girls “more” often without a doubt as not; but still there are many more that could be used rather than still just the makeup and costumes. The geeky type guy is often still cast so it still has gender issues with the role standards still being slightly different for men and women. HOWEVER, IT IS CHANGING TOO! A needed change, that has brought actors back to TV as well as viewers. The proof is that these unlikely women have won Emmy’s for their roles which will only continue to make positive advancements for more to feel confident enough to give it a go give it a shot.
Our environment is becoming more equally balanced with the changes we have seen in casting. I find this to be more realistic and comforting as the media changed we embraced its changes, and it is quite interesting how this all came about, and causes much debate. One could argue in the ways this came about. I see it from the perspective of the person looking for work. A young girl tries out for a starring role but she is not your typical TV “it factor” person for the job she seeks. Not long ago you would not even see a heavy, out of shape, young woman showing up for these calls. The change has been a needed advancement to reflect back to our minds what the world really looks like and how people responded to it. Whether the man or woman is overweight or has a disability or whatever. I have seen this as a slow occurrence happening over time.
This has such a broad and expansive range with so many proactive subjects affects with great potential opportunities, that I do not see it changing back, finally. In today’s reality, this is hitting our world straight on, the changes and affects to society are already rewarding, and I feel a lasting effect will prevail. This is a new way for TV and It is a new a fabulous thing for the bushiness. This should naturally flow into others areas as time moves forward. Affecting and having long time effects on advertising, fashion and more.
I recall that often in day soap operas new characters we often were introduced into the story line of the show, appearing as a geek, who becomes a princess. Fairy tales to reality and the common threads those writers were to follow. All kidding aside this as a huge plus for Hollywood and Broadway and is it enormous to actors. I find this a sad reality that this is just coming around to what life really looks like in, 2011? It has taken too long!
Therefore, it is quite refreshing to these actors and viewers assessing these changes. Preparing to audition and seeing those that were self conscious and shy come out of a shell is beautiful. Just being able to walk in with confidence has helped them tremendously.
Working as a muse and assisting agents and actors during their preparations to fit or fill the roles, which are changing for the better, makes everyone them more confident. I hope it remains and continues to help bring a self-confident feeling to many more. I cannot help but to wonder if all the reality shows played a role here? That would mean they actually served a purpose. Who would have thought? I see the effects of this and it is allowing as many more talented people to express their passions. The self-confidence needed to split open the veil, come forward, give it their all, and give it a shot. Clearly this has broadened my client work and scheduling for auditions preps from actors looking for work is also becoming congruent to the needs from the inside coming down the pike as to what is acceptable now as potential candidates on my call sheets. This has greatly increased as to whom the casting agents will consider, making my jobs shorter and frankly more realistic and fun.
